The Fantini group was founded in 1994 by Valentino Sciotti with the aim to produce top-quality wine from Abruzzo. The enterprise was so successful that the group decided to expand further south in Italy and also into Sicily. Today the Fantini group includes Cantina Diomede, Gran Sasso, Vesevo, Vigneti del Salento, Vigneti del Vulture, Tufarello, Zabù and Cantina Atzei, among others. Alberto Antonini oversees production, ensuring that these wines offer great quality, varietal character and value. Their elegant and striking packaging makes them stand out on the shelf or table.

Fantini is their flagship winery, producing wines from vineyards based in the northern part of Abruzzo, where ripeness and freshness combine in the wines. The forward and accessible Sangiovese is a case in point. All the wines made from Montepulciano have the hallmark colour and intensity of this variety but with a balance and accessibility that is often lacking in wines from this region. The deeply coloured, intense and powerful ‘Edizione’ Cinque Autoctoni is, according to owner Valentino Sciotti, “a true taste of southern Italy”. A blend of five native grape varieties (Montepulciano, Primitivo, Sangiovese, Negroamaro and Malvasia Rossa) grown across Abruzzo and Puglia, it is full and powerful yet fresh and nicely defined.

Their Cuvée Bianco Brut is a refreshing sparkling wine made from the local Cococciola; the Cuvée Rosato Brut is made of Aglianico from Basilicata. Both come in beautifully designed bottles with a Swarovski crystal on the label.

The Calalenta Pecorino is wonderfully balanced, with both a soft texture and vibrant freshness on the finish. The Calalenta Rosato is 100% Merlot and shows fresh aromas of strawberries and pink grapefruit with a refreshing acidity. Grapes for both wines come from west and south/west facing vineyards around the town of Ortona, on the Adriatic coast in Abruzzo, on calcareous clay soils.

The grapes for this wine come from the small farms controlled by the Farnese group in the areas around Ortona, San Salvo and Pollutri. The vine age here is between 25 and 50 years. The vineyards have a south-eastern exposure and the soils are a mixture of clay and limestone.

The 2019 vintage was very warm and dry, meaning that disease pressure was low. The grapes were left to ripen on the vine for longer to achieve a higher concentration of sugars and phenolics, as well as drying the berries naturally.

Once the fruit was received at the winery, it was gently crushed and destemmed, before undergoing maceration and fermentation in stainless steel tanks for 20 days at temperatures of 24-26°C. Finally, the wine was matured in barriques for 12 months prior to bottling.
