Château du Coing is located in the village of Saint Fiacre, in the Sèvre et Maine district of Muscadet. The current owner and winemaker, Véronique Günther-Chéreau, decided in 1990 to return to her family’s estate after achieving a doctorate degree in pharmacy. Véronique’s family had been making wine at Saint Fiacre since 1421, and she grew up on the estate. In 2011, her daughter Aurore joined the family domaine, following her biology and oenology studies in Dijon.

Unusually for an area dominated by the négociants, Château du Coing is family-run and uses only estate-grown fruit from its 40 hectares of distinctive gneiss soils which lie at the meeting point of the Sèvre and Maine rivers.

Château du Coing’s Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Sur Lie is fermented with indigenous yeasts and spends the winter on its lees. The bottling of ‘Sur Lie’ wines cannot legally start until after the first Thursday in the March following the vintage. ‘Confluentia’ comes from a single south-facing parcel located exactly at the confluence of the rivers. It spends 10 months on lees and impresses for its distinctive textured, fragrant style. ‘L’Ancestrale’, a very fine Muscadet, is aged on its lees for 42 months. It is complex with a full and structured mouthfeel, whose freshness belies its age.

This wine comes from a single parcel of vines grown on a 15% gradient, south-facing slope, right at the confluence of the Sèvre and Maine rivers. The Chateau's name, 'Coing', is a derivative of 'coin' meaning corner in French, indicating this wine comes from the very heart of the appellation. The soils have a metamorphic origin: gneiss with two micas, covered with a thin soil.

This particular vintage is special because there was some spring frost and unfortunately, resulted in a large part of the crop being lost. The main characteristic of the vintage is that the wines are more in the Loire style which means they are lighter than the 2020 vintage. This is due to the less hot summer than the previous year. The wine profile is fresher, mineral; an elegant style with very good balance.

Muscadet wines labelled 'Sur Lie' must be bottled between 1st March and 31st December in the year following the harvest. 'Confluentia' spent 6 months on its lees, in traditional underground tanks lined with glass.

This is a delightful wine that displays a classic citrus and white flower profile, alongside a very attractive texture. It is bold and nicely rounded with a very clean oyster shell freshness on the finish.
